Free Comic Book Day Guide
===
[00:00:00]
Welcome to the Multiverse Comics podcast. On today's episode, it's a preview episode leading up to free comic book day. We'll talk about all the books that are coming out and our specific picks for the best things that you need to pick up when you come out.
Enjoy.
Steven: / So, what is free comic book day? Well, it's the first Saturday in May. It is, it is. I don't know how long it's been going on, but it's been going on for I think a pretty decent wild here. I want to go out on a lemon, say 15 years up, maybe,
Jason: maybe even 20 this year. It's Saturday, May 3rd. Yep. Every local comic book store.
Participate. Participate most, like I say, every, I don't know of any that don't. I'm some out there. Yeah. You'd really
Steven: have to be the the sad sack of Comic bookstore to say, eh, I don't want to have anything to do with this. Yeah. It is the
Jason: [00:01:00] biggest day.
Steven: It's Black
Jason: Friday. It is Black Friday for Comic Bookstore.
It is
Scott: the day to
Jason: go
Scott: and just answer the trivia question. Yeah. May 4th. 2002, huh? Was the first. Okay, so free comic book. Book. 23,
Steven: 3 years. Yeah. Okay.
Jason: So yeah, 20 years. That was good. Good, good. Long time. And it's exactly what the name says. Yes. There are free comic books available that day that said.
Not all comic books are free on that day. Exactly.
Scott: We can't, we can't reiterate that enough.
Jason: Yes. So you'd be surprised. People come in and want everything they get, they can find just like all thumbs
Steven: of fingers, but not all fingers of thumbs. Yeah, you can, I never pass up a chance to, to use that. To use that.
'cause that's, you know, yes, there will be free comic books on free comic book day and you know how you can easily tell which ones are the free ones? At the very top it says Free. That's right. You
Jason: got it. Yeah. Free comic book day. You got it Fella at the very top. There it [00:02:00] is.
Scott: And they'll usually be on a table or a display of some sort.
Separate from the stuff. Separate from everything else.
Jason: Stuff that costs money. Now there is. Something that I didn't know until a couple of years ago. Lay it on us at the top. So the normal free comic book day logo is white words, blue frame around it, right? There are some, some free comic books that have.
A green frame. They're, they're framed in green. That's all ages. Younger kids can read the green books. Yeah. They are color coded by age groups. Are there any red band ones? There are red ones. And that is adult only. That's your, that's your rated R Comics.
Scott: And, and for our discussion today, I didn't pull all of those.
'cause we still have a whole box now. Right. Also. This is the publisher's. Please tell me there's a Howard Shake and Black Kiss frequent update. I didn't see that, but this is a publisher's attempt to give us an idea of what's coming up. They're hyping some of their big events sometimes. Correct. Used to, [00:03:00] they've reprint notable stories, but they've gotten away from that in the past few years and treated it more like a Hey, this is coming out this year.
Yes. Or sometime this year. To drive business. Yeah. Sometimes it's a preview
Jason: issue.
Scott: Yeah.
Jason: But sometimes it's like unique story. Like, you, you aren't gonna get this story anywhere else. Correct.
Scott: It's gonna lead, it's gonna lead into something. The, the, the blackest Night Zero was one I remember for free comic book day.
Jason: Well, and I think this all in thing. The, the, the DC one is probably the most, well actually there's a DC one and an Ultimate Universe one, a DC absolute one ultimate universe, one that both have sort of. Lead in stories to
Steven: their big events. So the, and don't quote me on this, but I believe that the, the shift from reprints to some kind of original content, I believe that was started by Marvel.
Yeah. And it was some free [00:04:00] comic book day issues that. Featured Spider-Man. I think it actually tied into brand new day, which is why if you are on the back issue, hunt free comic book day issues tend to be, you know, if, if, if you do see 'em in a back issue bin, it's, it'll be like a buck or two, you know, just for the sake of putting a price sticker on it.
But some of those Spider-Man ones are actually worth some money because that's the only issue where that content appeared. Yeah, so. So yeah, it, it was just a, the, the point behind it was to get people to go to a local comic book store, grab a few things for free, check 'em out, see if it's something that you would like, see if it's something you'd like to pursue.
And, and there you go. And I think now you, you might know the answer to this, Jason. So there are. Tears when it comes to ordering. 'cause, 'cause the [00:05:00] shop will be paying for these comics. Yeah. They're not given to the shops for free. True. Yeah. It's not, it's not
Jason: free to us. It's free to the, the buyers.
It's free for the consumers. We still have to pay. It's, it's not like what we pay for a normal comic. It's a nominal fee. Yeah. It's a, it's a, it's basically the, the cost of the comic that we're, we cover the, the cost, and maybe not even all of that, but we're paying, you know, 25 cents to 50 cents per. Per book, but we are buying those as promotional items too.
Right? So we do that
Steven: on purpose. Yes, indeed. Yeah. How does that tier thing work, though? Because isn't it like if you order a certain amount, you'll get X, Y, Z, but if you order a little bit more, you'll get X, Y, Z, A, B, and C or something like that.
Jason: So there's a couple. There's like the, there's a gold tier, silver tier, gold tier.
Silver tier, yeah. Yeah. You. I think that has a lot to do with the level of sponsorship from the publisher. Okay. Whether they're gold or they're [00:06:00] silver, because the books are either gold or silver. Okay. But for us we just, in order to participate in free comic book day and be listed on the site that says where to find a shop and all that in order to participate, we have a minimum number of books and we're required to order.
All of them. Right. Okay. So it's sort of a, you have to have a, there's a minimum number of everything that you have to buy and then others, we choose to buy more of those, those things. Yes. So, of course all the. Big name publishers, all the things that we think are going to be interesting, exciting, and popular.
And people will want more of them, right? We'll, we'll get more of them. And then there's lots of them where we just get the minimum. Yes, we only buy the minimum
Steven: available. That that, that's absolutely true. Now, I remembered this because we had a conversation about free comic book day. We had a podcast about a year ago.
Okay. If you remember this, because free comic book day was coinciding with the two last [00:07:00] year's, two big big two events, which was blood hunt and absolute power. Yep. Okay. And absolute powers. There was a free comic book day issued for absolute power that. Actually came out the week. The issue one or is it blood hunt?
I think it was blood. It was blood hunt. Sorry. It blood. It was lead in that did that. So blood hunt issue one came out a Wednesday and the lead in was in the free comic book day, which was released on the Saturday. Yeah, they mess that up. Well see we, we talked about this because it's, on one hand it seemed like, well.
Wouldn't you? Oh yeah. I guess the Saturday before, but the other thought was, well, but wait a minute. If you came in and, and you read it and was like, oh, this is cool. Oh, kind of like this vampire thing. Do, do you have issue one right here? Yeah, right here. And that was, I think it was the, there [00:08:00] was a free comic book day issue.
That had something very important. I think it was a Marvel book and like stores had run out, so we were actually getting a lot of foot traffic from people who shop at other stores. How dare they saying, Hey, do you have any more copies? Nope, they're gone. Yeah, it was, yeah,
Jason: it was. They didn't tell us that was happening.
No, that, so that was, that's kind of the smack and so. I think we should tell you by listening, just so we don't lose you. What we wanna do is just go through some of the things that are coming this free comic book day. Yeah. Which is coming up this week. Like the, the week that we release this, this episode, we will have free comic book day.
So, just, just be ready for that. And then so I'll run through. All of the gold and silver tier books that are in here, they're listed. And then let's talk about some of the, the highlights, some of the big ones that we think are interesting. I've read a [00:09:00] couple already and I, I know a little backstory on a couple of others, so we can we can dive into those.
But I'm gonna, I'll just run through the gold tier comics that, that we have coming out and. Marvel, God bless them. Marvel and and DC have both. Finally, I don't know how many years we've asked them to, if you're gonna have a big movie, do something comic related to tie into the dang thing, right? Well, they did.
So there's a big fantastic four free comic book day book. We also are gonna have a new fantastic four. Number one that, that comes out about the same time as the movie, and that is. Great news for us. We also have a brand new Superman, number one, Superman Unlimited, number one that is coming out a new series written by Dan Slot.
And there's a preview of that coming out in the the all in [00:10:00] books for in the DC. Free books, but the Gold Books have fantastic four. There's another Marvel one that is a spider verse. So it's a, it's one half of it is about Spider-Man. The other half is about the ultimate universe. And I'll, I'll dive into that one.
'cause I, that's one I've read, I, I'm excited about. We have. Some Star Wars. Goodness. We've got young Jedi coming, that's one of our green band ones. There's a inner John universe, so if you're into Transformers, GI Joe, and that sort of combined universe, there's a a book about that and that's going to be a unique one that that comes out.
Power Rangers VR is one of those as well. That's, that's gonna be in. And then the the broader list includes random House children's books. 'cause Pink One Random House is an introdu introduction to this. So, random House children's books includes, including Dr. Seuss is [00:11:00] going to come out with some.
Of course it's a green band book. I Hate Fairyland is a red band book, meaning it's a, it's for the grownups. Also, Conan is a grownup book that's coming. There's a new Archie that's green banded a a Minecraft manga. Free comic book day book, which sounds interesting to me. Speed Racer. And then the, the combo.
You never knew you needed Thundercats and the Powerpuff girls team up in one of these books, and I just kind of wanna read it. I wanna know what in the world they do to combine Thundercats and Powerpuff girls. Those are the gold tier in the silver tier we have, a thing called bundle of champion.
We, we have creaky acres. I dunno what creaky acres is gonna be. We have critical role black hammer. So critical role if you're into critical role. There is a free comic book day book coming out for that [00:12:00] one. Blood type number zero. And that's a blue band, so it sounds like it would be a red band.
It's a blue band. Godzilla New Heroes, IDW Dark. Find your New Fear Red Band book. Here's a green band book. Iron Man and, and friends and Spidey and friends. Sort of a combo of those two are coming. And then there's a Marvel Voices one, it's Iron Heart and Marvels. Then you've got star Wars number one book.
Also Blue band tower Dungeon. Let's see. Transformers, the worst bot ever is a green band book. A book called Bad Kitty Gets a job that's also green banded. Best of 2000 ad Black Mirror number one. Boom Studio's 20th anniversary. Special Def Leppard Hysteria. Is a red band book Diablo, also [00:13:00] Red Banded gargoyles Denia, if you remember Gargoyles that is coming out with a comic.
Hulk Teach is a green band kids book I don't know how to pronounce this. Kura, Bachi and Boto. Two is a book coming out. I don't know what that one is. Mark Spears Monsters keen Spot Toy Box Special.
Steven: Let's see. Let me stop you there just for one second. Yeah. So one of the, while you've been going through the, the.
Did you read the Power Puff Girl one? No, no, no, no, no. I, I'm, I'm, I'm sort of flicking through some of these and one of them is called Superman's, good Guy Gang, and I guess it's a preview of Superman movie. It's got some of the characters. Well, okay, so what it says is, is that it's an exclusive preview of the graphic novel launching DC's new early reader line.
Superman's, good guy gang, designed for [00:14:00] ages five to seven and fun for the whole family. This book is Superman Hawk Girl and Guy Gardner Green Lanter, which incidentally enough is the, that's piece of the movie lead up in the, the leads in the film. And I'm just kind of giggling over the fact that just in looking at the art alone.
Guy Gardner as a, these are like little kitty kind of versions of these characters. The little kitty version of Guy Gardner's kind of a jerk. He looks like a, you know, sort of atypical bully thug. He's also got the ball cut and he's got the ball cut. Yep. So they, that's, that's brilliant. But the other preview for these early reader books is, is a book called Aquaman.
And it's calling all fans of Narwhal and Jelly. There's a new adventurous sea creature. You gotta meet Aqua Manity. So it is a manatee wearing an [00:15:00] Aquaman costume. I, I'm gonna have to get that book because I've got a soft spot for manatees. And just the whole, I I, this is a book I need to have in my house.
On the off chance that I ever have small children come to visit. I can whip out a. And and read this with them because that just looks freaking delightful. And so there you go. That's, that's, yeah, that's, that's made me smile. That has
Jason: the only one I haven't gone over in this, in the bigger list is.
The Phantom Number zero.
Scott: I kind of wanna read that. Yeah. Well, so what, what's the, is it the Phantom? The P Phantom, oh, I definitely, I didn't see that pile. See, that's the, that's kind
Steven: of the, the, the really fun thing about free comic book day is because if all the publishers get in on it, you can actually get.
A pretty neat slice of, and obviously everybody wants to take, like you said, the, the big two. They've got the [00:16:00] Fantastic four book and the Alt Superman unlimited book. And ah, gotta have those, you, you gotta have those. But you'll kind of hit some like, oh, you know, you grab a fan or 2080 usually puts one out and that's, that'll have like a judge dread story in it or something.
It's like, oh, that's kind of, that's kind of fun. You know what's funny? They don't
Jason: have, they don't have any of the DC books listed as in the gold or silver tier books. None of the Penguin Random House stuff. If you can only order it from Penguin Random House. Yeah. You can't order it through Diamond.
Huh? None of it's showing up in the tiers. So that, that's interesting. There's a little bit of, little bit of political nonsense in comic book land that you don't need to worry about always. That's that's happening so. I'll tell you the, the DC one, they have the the. One, they have a book called All in Special Edition.
One Half is the Superman Unlimited thing I mentioned. The other one is Absolute Universe. And the [00:17:00] Absolute Universe one has it's new material that hasn't been in any of the absolutes. We've we've seen the character that it's about, it's a, it's a mirror master story. We saw him show up in. Just briefly in one of the, one of the issues and it looks like it's going to tie into a bigger story.
Like we've wondered how these two worlds are gonna collide and Nero master is gonna play something in that. So I think this book is gonna be a nice lead in to, to that in the end, and all it says is to be continued summer of 2025. So I love this. I love that they're doing a, a new story. It's sort of giving the back history, the story of some of the, the absolute characters that we all love now and, it's it's leading into something coming up. And Marvel did something very similar in their book. So they have an ultimate universe [00:18:00] tie in in theirs because absolute and ultimate, absolute for DC and the ultimate universe and Marvel are sort of both reimaginings of the of the main universe with characters with slightly different powers and things showing up.
Because some nefarious force has corrupted the way they get their powers in the end. It's different in both worlds, but a little bit the same thematically. And one of the things that happens in the, the ultimate universe is we we're introduced Miles, Morales talks to the master who's sort of the arch bad guy.
In the universe and the master is saying, Hey, you know, we're the only people left from our original universe. Master maker Make, sorry. The maker. The Maker, evil
Scott: Reed, Richard
Jason: Evil Re, Richard Evil, Reed Richards. We're the only two guys left in our universe. So you should come with, you should come with me.
'cause I'm going back home to, to my own. To our own universe and I'm gonna make it better. Right? And Miles' like, nah, I'm good. Well, [00:19:00] this picks up, this story picks up right after that conversation. It shows in one page of that conversation and then sort of what happens afterwards. And it's really interesting because apparently it leads into a storyline that takes place later this summer that I don't know a lot about.
But it says to be continued in ultimate Spider-Man incursion number one. So the idea is that there's going to be a, a crossover and incursion between the ultimate universe and the main universe, which will be pretty fun to read. And the original Ultimate Invasion was that too, like with the first time we saw the Ultimate World, it was it was the maker.
Coming over and wreaking havoc with our, our intrepid Good guys. So I like that they're doing that. Those are two that I would keep an eye out for. It also gives a nice little overview of what's happening in, in the new Spider-Man. We have a brand new Spider-Man, number one in and number two that have just come out.[00:20:00]
And it gives a nice little, it's a little side side Quest story of Spider-Man, but it's still drawn by John Romita Jr. Written by the same team. It's a. And it sort of references what's happening, what the current status quo is for Spider-Man. And we do have a nice new jumping on point for our friendly neighborhood Spider-Man right now.
So I liked what they did there. If you've been wondering about Spider-Man, hey, this is a good jumping on point for you. That is a book to read to see if you like it.
Steven: I love, I'm flicking through the Star Wars free comic book day. And one of, there's three stories in it, kind of, spotlighting three different Star Wars comics that Marvel puts out, which is pretty smart move.
And one of them, the story is called the Moon of Death. So, that's how you, that's how you drag in the punters you with the title like the Moon of Death. Nice. There you go. The voices Marvel Voices book. So this, this is selections [00:21:00] from there is a new story in there by Justina Island who recently did some overflow work on the.
Eight deaths Spider-Man close out which her issues were actually pretty good. So there is a new story featuring Iron Heart, but then the rest of the book seems to be made up of snippets from books that have already have come out. So you're getting a little bit of new content. You're getting some reprints.
Again, I, I don't think anyone can really be too judgy about this stuff. It is a free comic book after all. The point is not actually to attract existing readers. The point is to bring people in who don't read or maybe normally wouldn't set foot in a comic bookstore and say, come in, let's have a look and see what you're missing out on.
So that's always, I like
Scott: that. That's
Steven: always good fun. I'm, I'm thumbing through
Scott: the Marvel Fantastic. Four.
Steven: Yeah. Ramos is, is on, is doing the yard on this. [00:22:00] I'm very pleased with that. I've always liked his
Scott: stuff. North is still the rider, so I enjoy that. Doing great. And then the backup, I'm actually, I'm glad to see that.
My speculation on this backup story was correct a couple weeks ago. There was a comic book site that I follow where. Ms. Marvel's being inserted Yeah. Into different points in the X-Men history. And they were, this, this particular podcaster was convinced, they're rewriting all the history permanently.
And I was like, no, this feels like, since, since she's jumping in in five different points of mm-hmm. Their history, this feels like exactly what, so they're, they're showing me the first little, yes. This is not a permanent rewriting of the X-Men. Everyone calmed down. I'm not saying. I go out and grab it just based on this, but I've thumbed through it and it looks a little interesting.
I don't, there's a third story in here. There is, and it's,
Steven: it's,
Scott: it's kind of funny. Waring and Deadpool popularity contest. No,
Steven: look again. [00:23:00] It's not Wolverine and Deadpool. Oh, it's Wolver Pool in Denver. Alright, there we go. And they are talking about free comic book day. So this, that's gonna be fun. That's the fourth wall breaking kind.
Absolutely. And that's fun. And, and the end, its says to be continued in wolver pool and dead. Kill Paul, number one. And then there's a in, in the Princess it says, no, that's not gonna happen.
Scott: And I'm also thumbing through the Power Rangers, prime VR troopers. Justin kind of, I like
Steven: that cover.
Scott: Just, Jason kind of touched on that earlier.
You know, I'm an old fart. I remember the VR trooper knockoffs mm-hmm. Back in the eighties and nineties more from Sure. The headaches that caused a blockbuster when the movies got behind the wrong cover boxes and people thought they were getting Power Rangers. This is the first time the VR property's been used in a long time, so this might be, if you're a little nostalgia for that era, this might be a, a [00:24:00] jumping on point for you.
Well, currently
Jason: in the Power Rangers. Comics. Yeah. You've got Power Rangers Prime and you've got the VR troopers, and they both live in the same world. The story though, with the VR troopers is that they're, they're the primary rangers in that world, and Prime rangers were given their powers by a bad guy.
So the Prime Rangers and the VR troopers are kind of, fighting right now. But the Prime Rangers are still good guys. So it's, it's one of the, the, oh, these two sets of good guys are fighting each other. The way all good guys meet and the Justice League does is every time they reform. Yeah. Oh, the first time we meet, we should fight each other.
But that's, that's the rule of superhero wing. Yeah. That, that's right.
Steven: Yeah, to every time show fight first.
Scott: Every time I show up to a new job, I punch someone in the face. Absolutely. So I mean, why? Why wouldn't you? Well, isn't that
Steven: why like every Marvel character has actually fought Spider-Man? Yeah. Because that's usually the lead in on an issue of Marvel team [00:25:00] up.
Well, he is a Spider-Man. Fight Spider-Man. Realize Spider-Man's a good guy. Solved problem with Spider-Man. Yeah, he has a very punchable face.
Jason: He
Steven: does well. He's red. You see red. I mean, it makes you punch down. You go. Absolutely. That's it as a shop. Jason, what are we doing on free comic book day? Anything interesting?
Jason: Well, hold on. Lemme talk. Intergen Universe,
Steven: if you must.
Jason: Yeah, so Intergen Universe is, this is the, the combined universe from Skybound with GI Joe, transformers, and then Void Rivals, which is the sort of unique book that comes out in all of this stuff. And this, this comic is picking up directly after.
The most recent issue of GI I Joe, like panel for panel. So if you read GI Joe, the last panel that you see in GI Joe, it carries into the first panels you see in the free [00:26:00] comic book day book. So it is absolutely a part of the storyline. So if you're into those books in the Intergen universe, get this and it's setting up kind of a univer, intergen universe sort of crossover event that's going to.
Did the Intergy Universe book that, that Yeah. That they put out. So I'm, I'm picking it up. John told me I, I should, so I'm going to read these. I'm in and out on Transformers. Transformers is hugely popular in the shop. Like we have more people on transformers than we have on, well, we did have more people on Transformers than Batman.
Now that we have Hushed two, and I bet we have more Batmans, but who knows? But we, transformers has been very, very popular and it's gone. It's gone very well. So I'm gonna try to jump back in and catch up on all my back issues of GI Joe, transformers, and read this along the way. You asked what we're doing as a shop.
So as a shop, we we obviously are participating. We have the free comic books [00:27:00] here. We and those will be out on a table in the center of, of the shop. If you, if you do that, anytime you order books from us if you don't live here, we will pack in free comic book day. Books for the month of May.
So anything you order during the month of May, we pack in free stuff with it and you'll get some of these free comics along the way. And we feel like everybody should get to participate. Absolutely. So that's how, that's how we do it. So, yeah,
Scott: and if you've referenced this podcast, all three of us will sign one of the free comic book day books in your order and send it in, which Will Will, which, which will surely decrease the value since ne none of us had anything to do with the book.
But I think it's a cool marketing trick. Absolutely. We'll, in the little
Steven: boxes you're supposed to put your stamp at. Well, I was gonna say, and if you spend more than a hundred dollars, we will sign the name of the creator of your choice. That's it. Because that's why
Jason: wouldn't we? Yeah, we'll just say we're anybody.
Anybody you really want to autograph it, we will autograph and say that we're that person. That's You want Jack Kby? Absolutely. There
Steven: you go. To Impersonate. What's your name? [00:28:00] Okay. To Freddy. Keep reading comics buddy. Jack Kby. There you go.
Scott: And we'll put it in quotes so we don't get sued. Absolute, exactly.
We'll, we'll do all of those. We'll do all of
Jason: those. Yes,
Steven: absolutely.
Jason: No. So we we typically will run big sales on back issues. During that time we wait to announce the sale, so you'll have to keep, keep an eye on our socials and on our website for what the exact sale is. But we announced that on the Thursday before free comic book day.
Typically. And if you, if you're really curious, you can probably go back in time on our Facebook and we'll run the exact same sale. 'cause we almost always run the same sale. But we shall see, we shall see. There'll be some big there'll be some big savings to be had this year for free comic book day.
And the oh, all of our bags, all of our comics, probably not the free ones, but all of our comics are bagged and boarded in the shop. Correct. Which is sort of our claim to fame. We bag and board [00:29:00] comics so far, even now that bags and boards are getting more and more scarce with our, our tariff problems and getting more pricey.
So far so good. We are. Still able to bag and board comics for you. And I've got about 300 packs of bags and boards that I can keep us afloat for a little while. Outstanding. It, it always helps that we make our, we it makes a big difference.
Steven: Yeah. You know, we do wanna look after these things right from the moment you buy them.
So there you
Jason: go. Yep. So we we do that for you. So. Come out one and all free comic book day. We'll give lots of free stuff away. We will have almost everything else on sale at the same time. And then make sure you sign up for a sub. So if there's something that you're like, oh man, this image on Universe looks super cool sign up for subscription right there and you can we'll hold the next version for you.
Same thing with. The, the DC all in absolute books. We've gotten a ton of people in that have not been reading comics before, [00:30:00] that are reading Absolute Batman, absolute Superman, absolute Wonder Woman, et cetera. And they're, they're brand new subs, subscriptions to those books. And we we order those, we hold them for you.
They're bagged and boarded. You walk in the store and we just hand you your stuff and all you have to do is pay us. We're good to go.
Scott: And, and if you're local on Saturday, come in and say hi to us. Most of us will probably be cycling in and out of the store on Saturday and come down and ask exactly who is Postman Pat and how how magical is he in our store?
Because those locals will get to see our, our favorite postman. They'll come in here and help us sell stuff as well. And if you haven't watched Pat work, it's a it's an absolute joy. It's
